In September 2010 Askews and Holts Library Services piloted a service with Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea Libraries for the provision of titles that were neither In Print nor available from mainstream suppliers for Reader Request items.

Although the library use inter-library loans (ILL) for some material, there were many items they wanted to actually own and not just borrow. Until the pilot started, this was a service Kensington & Chelsea managed but found the time taken to handle the orders and the associated administration, time and cost prohibitive.

Sue Wills, Stock Manager, Kensington & Chelsea said –‘Publishers are taking or doing increasingly short first print runs and as a result we are struggling to supply some of our Readers Requests. I’m getting emails from customers saying ‘It’s on Amazon. Why can’t I have it?’ So, we decided that they could and that means we have more satisfied customers, thanks to Askews and Holts Library Services ExStream service’

The pilot was extremely successful and this has now been rolled out to other Askews and Holts Library Services contracted customers.

We only supply items where their condition meets the specification of the library authority – e.g. Excellent, Very Good or Good and upon receipt at Askews and Holts, the goods are fast tracked, processed to library specification, invoiced and delivered, with supporting EDI, to make the service full shelf ready.

Such value added solutions provided by Askews and Holts Library Services are designed to assist libraries in the administration of their service, whilst at the same time enhancing their provision and reputation as a first class library service.
